Gilbert Duclos
October 2 to November 30, 1997

| "I go from one street to the other in large cities seeking that which cannot be found! Occasionally, that instant as fleeting as it is definitive occurs, and I step in to capture it on film." |
Taking his inspiration from the photographs and work methods of photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau and André Kertész, Gilbert Duclos presents images in black and white of street scenes straight out of life. His images show us the city in its full verticality and urbanity. We are forever confronted with passersby strolling on the sidewalk or in public areas. The photographer also avoids all direct links with the person photographed, which accentuates the spontaneous and authentic character of the scenes selected. This exhibition enables us to appreciate a few moments of urban poetry in various cities such as New York, Paris, Montréal, London, Rome, Berlin and Amsterdam. |
Biography Gilbert Duclos was born in Montreal in 1952. He became a professional photographer in 1976, after studying photography at the CEGEP du Vieux-Montréal, While very active in the field of editorial photography, in cooperation with many Québec, Canadian and foreign magazines, Gilbert Duclos devoted twenty years to the development of a series of city images. His artistic work has been published in the form of posters, postcards and in various cultural magazines. After an absence of several years, (his latest exhibition in Montréal going back to 1984 at Espace OVO), he now returns to our city with new images. |
