October 1 to November 15, 1998

Artist's Statement

In January 1996 I started to photograph the Zone building. I continued to take pictures over the next year and a half. At times, when the light was at its best, I would come every day. Even when the light was dim, when I couldn't get the pictures I wanted, I would come to witness the process. I was compelled to witness not only the building's spectacular beauty but also its decay. I was determined to preserve as many abandoned corners as I could. My repeated visits to the site also gave me the opportunity to have a direct and ongoing contact with the architects and designers whose vision was gradually bringing new life to the building. By observing and documenting their work and the many challenges they faced, I was able to develop a better understanding of the essence of this magnificent industrial ruin.
